      Blaca Desert

They have developed a trade route through the bay that nowadays people call Popova vala. Since 1862 and until 1962 Blaca was run by the Milicevic priests. With the death of Don Nikola Milicevic, the last one of them, this desert of Croatian Glagolitic extinguished. This little desert at Brač Island has a great heritage value. It started as a cave fenced with stones, and hermits were eventually upgrading ground floors for different purposes (kitchens, basements, stoves etc.).

In an era of prosperity luxurious building with more floors were built. In the year 1588 Renaissance church was built that got expended in the next century. The church has three Baroque halls, and in the desert there are pictures of the Venetian school of the 17th century. The way to Blaca desert on the Brač Island is actually a beautiful, marked trail through a pine forest. From the main road where you must take the stone path to the Blaca desert it takes an hour of slow walk.

Once a famous Glagolitic desert, and later even an observatory, it is located on the eastern slope of the valley on the southern side of the Brač Island between Bol and Milna. In 15th century, when the Turks invaded, Glagolitic priests fled from Poljica to the Brač Island, where the Prince of Brac gave them permission to settle.

In 1552 they founded the monastic cooperative society and began to cultivate land which was given to them as donation. In 1570 Glagolitic priests have obtained permission to build a monastery and church.

There is also a tavern Vladimir Nazor. 100 meters below there are the remains of the old Croatian chapel St. Vid.

The main access road to the Vid’s Mountain is an asphalt road that branches off from the main road Supetar-Bol. After 1 kilometre the road turn towards the wilderness and Blaca desert.

The road to Vid’s Mountain continues with 4 kilometres gentle climb through the pine forest. The road is suitable for travel by bike or by car although it can be reached by foot from Bol but the terrain is a little difficult and the ascent takes about 2 hours. The view from Vid’s Mountain at Brač Island is unique and worth all the effort.
